Checking materials for faults:
- Check hardware, software and connections
- Historical context, what checking for materials used to be
- Editor/editorial assistant responsibility
- Digital video recordings - Check recordings
Why should you do this?
You need to consider checking all of your equipment for the simple reason that i might not be working properly. It is very important to check this before you start filming because if not you will have to backtrack and film again, in film this is time consuming and time consuming tasks are not what you need to meet your deadlines.
Checking connections... This is a really simple problem that people do without realizing.
You must make sure that all you wires and cables are plugged in and are working properly. Not checking for this problem could lead to thoughts that the technology is not working. This is a very simple mistake however could be a costly one. For example, a piece of technology is not working, you start to question why, you panic and then buy a new piece of equipment. The fact is that the piece of equipment was working the whole time it just was not plugged in properly.
Another key thing to consider will be the usage of the equipment, is it heavily used or brand new?
If your materials and equipment are quite old, it could affect its performance. For example, is you are using an old camera, the picture quality could be quite fuzzy. You should check this because it is important to see if the equipment or materials are on there way out. Equipment can be replaced at a cost, However you need to ask yourself if the cost is worth making the quality of your film better.
What would 'Checking materials for faults' mean back in the day?
Back in the day they would use 'Film rolls' to store footage on. It would be extremely important to check this type of material because it is crucial for the footage to be up to scratch. Speaking for scratches, an important thing to look for when checking these types of footage would be if the strip is scratched. When the strip gets scratched the footage, when it is being edited, will be pix elated in parts therefore the footage will not run smoothly.
Corrupted digital files is an example of a fault.
